Review: Jillian Michaels’ 30-Day Shred
OK so you ladies (and gents) know I’m a gym-rat and I love fitness and working out. But I gotta say, Jillian Michaels kicked my ASS! And on Level One no less!
I do think I need lighter weights than the 8 lb. ones I have because I was struggling with some exercises and form is more important than the amount of weights being lifted.
I like how Jillian talks to you, and found her encouraging, not annoying like some fitness instructors are. I genuinely felt like I didn’t want to (ha!) let her down.
And what I like best is it’s under 25 minutes so I can do it start-to-finish three times a week without necessarily needing to go to the gym at the crack of dawn. (more…)

Training Session #1
I’ve been lifiting on and off since freshman year of high school, so I went into this with some knowledge … but it didn’t prepare me for the arse-whooping I got!!
We’re dividing my sessions into body parts, and last night was purely legs. I don’t think I’ve ever worked so hard in all my life!! She pushed me, and I felt the burn and loved it. I’ve missed it; that empowering “Yes I can!” sensation.
When I was off-form, she corrected me. Likewise, when I had excellent form, she praised me. It was good for me to have someone pushing me; it reminds me of running with my husband, who always sticks with me, but pushes me along when I’m feeling exhausted. Some people hate the pressure; I thrive off it.

Training Agenda
So I met with the trainer this evening for a brief consultation. She felt awful; she’d been out sick and no one gave her the messages until today … but it’s all good now.
I’m going to go Thursday morning for my body composition and hopefully measurements (I’m hoping she’ll do them then instead of at my first session). Then Monday at 6:30 I’ll have my first of three sessions. We are going to focus on specific muscle groups.
She’ll be giving me a three-day-a-week routine — not done on consecutive days. She says my initial session will be about an hour and fifteen minutes, so we can walk through each of these exercises.
One day each week will be chest, arms, back. Then another day will be legs, glutes and something else … blanking. And the third session each week will be abs, core and legs. (more…)

Soar With Your Strengths

… Which I’ll be honest, I thought sounded totally cheesy and ridiculous at first glance.
But after a brief perusal of the little pocket-sized book, I realized just how on to something the author was.
The book spoke reality: all too often in school or at work, we’re encouraged to fix the things that are “wrong” with us. To get better at this or improve that. Well, this book’s premise is the exact opposite.
If a student isn’t good at math, the book argues, don’t try to make her love it. Rather, let her flourish in her passion for British lit or pyschology.
If an employee is really good at Excel and administrative tasks, don’t put him on the phone making cold calls to new business prospects.
Sure, every corporate executive can benefit from media training. But that doesn’t mean that shy executive X should necessarily be the face of your company in a live interview on CNN to the world … especially not if he’s better at the written word or telephone interrogations.
If we strengthen the things we’re good at, the book proposes, instead of spending energy and money trying to fix what’s “wrong” with us, won’t we be better students and more productive employees? Better friends, better lovers, better partners? YES! (more…)

Women’s Health: This is Your Body on Exercise
I’m all about sharing interesting articles today. I read this one tonight at the gym in the November issue of Women’s Health.
For all you fitness fiends, this great article explains, in layman’s terms, what’s actually happening to our bodies when we push ourselves — and why it feels so damn good to do it!
